A robot is an electro-mechanical or bio-mechanical device or group of devices that can perform autonomous or preprogrammed tasks. A telerobot may act under the direct control of a human, such as the robotic arm on a space shuttle, or autonomously under the control of a programmed computer. Robots may be used to perform tasks that are too dangerous or difficult for humans, such as radioactive waste clean-up, or may be used to automate mindless repetitive tasks that should be performed with more precision by a robot than by a human, such as automobile production.

ASIMO is the culmination of two decades of humanoid robotics research by Honda engineers. ASIMO can run, walk on uneven slopes and surfaces, turn smoothly, climb stairs, and reach for and grasp objects. ASIMO can also comprehend and respond to simple voice commands. ASIMO has the ability to recognize the face of a select group of individuals. Using its camera eyes, ASIMO can map its environment and register stationary objects. ASIMO can also avoid moving obstacles as it moves through its environment.

Japanese robot start-up ZMP Inc. unveils new Robot Nuvo. The humanoid robot can be controlled with a cellular phone or through voice commands. Nuvo, is 39cm tall, weighs 2.5kg and is able to regain its feet on its own when it falls over.

She can hold a conversation, make eye contact, and express joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness. But is she good with kids?

These school-age tots seem to be making friends with EveR-1, a female android that made her debut this month in South Korea. The robot was built by Baeg Moon-hong, a senior researcher with the Division for Applied Robot Technology at the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) in Ansan, just south of Seoul (see a map of South Korea).

EveR-1 is designed to resemble a Korean female in her early 20s, according to a KITECH press release. Fifteen motors underneath her silicon skin allow her to express a limited range of emotions, and a 400-word vocabulary enables her to hold a simple conversation.

The android weighs 110 pounds (50 kilograms) and would stand 5 feet, 3 inches (160 centimeters) tall—if she could stand. EveR-1 can move her arms and hands, but her lower half is immobile.

AIBO (Artificial Intelligence roBOt, also means "love" or "attachment" in Japanese) is one of several types of robotic pets designed and manufactured by Sony; there have been several different models since their introduction in 1999. Able to walk, "see" its environment via camera, and recognize spoken commands, they are considered to be autonomous robots, since they are able to learn and mature based on external stimuli from their owner or environment, or from other AIBOs. Artist Hajime Sorayama created the initial designs for the AIBO.

This robot model was completely scratch built for a customer to his exact specifications. The model was designed in a 3D computer program and renderings were sent to me as a guide to build the model. The main body is made from two 6" Plastruct hemispheres.

Urethane resin castings of scratch built master patterns were employed to create most of the other main parts like the feet, legs, arms and thrusters. Finishing details were made from sheet styrene, copper and brass tubing and aluminum rods. By complete coincidence, a small plastic lens robbed from a disposable camera was a perfect fit for the "eye" of the Robot model.

The "Nanofly" name was a decal produced by JBOT which has mirror like gold foil applied. The model was sprayed with specially mixed metallic automotive laquers and given a semigloss clear coat to match the look of the original computer generated renderings.

Word is somewhere in Tokyo a school is being gaurded by a heavily armed Robot with brain reading abilities. Ok, I was just kidding about the heavily armed and brain reading abilities. But according to dottocumtu “that a primary school in Tokyo is experimenting with stationing a robot at its entrance to register its pupils’ movements in and out and guard against intruders.” Apparently, if you approach within four metres, the robot will hold out its right hand and ask you to hold your ID card over the IC chip reader in its palm; once you do, it will greet you by name and let you know that your teacher has been informed of your arrival or departure. HUH? ok can someone see I,robot becoming a reality. Well according to this, I can.

Internet Renaissance Robot (ITR), new and innovative toy from Species Ltd. “The robot is 33cm tall and weighs 1.5kg. It’s powered by a RPU-50 SH3 133Mhz CPU and connects to a network via Wireless LAN (RTML, Robot Transaction Markup Language). It’s in fact a small companion robot that, once properly programmed, can download and communicate specific information to you. You can also use your telephone to communicate with the robot via the web.”



Super Cool Ridable Robots

Now this is a cool concept from a company called Robot3, a four-legged ridable robot called R7, which features a plush seat you can sit in while it walks around under your control.

“The company has enormous range featuring robots shaped like animals and it even has designed a robot shaped like a girl! The robot-cum-vehicle is priced at $5,250. So, if you love to ride animal creatures like horses, raptor and dinosaur, then you can have as many rides as you want!! Besides, its comparatively lot more cheap a price for a functional robot…what say!!”
