Our practice is focused on a wide-range of project types including multi-family housing, mixed use and commercial projects – all of which emphasize urbanism, environmental performance and design innovation. Competitive candidates will exhibit special design talent, be open-minded, work well in a collaborative environment, and possess a strong work ethic. This individual will work directly with the Principal and senior staff to develop concept designs often under tight deadlines. This is a unique opportunity for a highly qualified candidate to have a significant impact on the design trajectory of an emerging practice. Must know Rhino, Sketchup, AutoCad, Adobe Suite and have rendering ability in 3D Studio, Vray or other package. The architect should have 5+ years of experience and be able to work from schematics through construction administration. Project types include healthcare facilities, educational, commercial and residential buildings. The candidate must be proficient with the coordination and detailing of full sets of construction documents.
Qualified candidates must have experience with new construction as well as renovation of small and large scale projects. Strong CAD/technical abilities are needed and experience with client interaction is a must. Qualifications:

Interns play a crucial role in Extension Gallery for Architecture’s success. Currently, Extension Gallery is seeking applicants for its Summer 2008, Fall 2008 and Winter 2009 Internship positions, staring in July 2008. Interns are the core members of a small staff, and receive exposure to a broad range of activities from daily operations and exhibition installations, to institutional development and archival research. All interns are community service oriented students/recent graduates. The interns come from a design, art, or art administration background and demonstrate an enthusiasm for process of design thinking. Extension Gallery is eager to mentor students with strong construction, writing, and organizational skills.
The internship is unpaid. All applicants must be able to commit to certain days of the week for 3-4 months.
Gallery Mission
Founded in 2007, Extension Gallery for Architecture is a nonprofit organization committed to incubating, investigating, and testing new thought in spatial practice and architecture. The gallery acts as a platform for dialogue between national and international practices and between architecture and other disciplines and cultural expressions such as film, art, graphics, and design. Extension Gallery commissions architects to design site-specific installations that transform the space of the gallery with allowing architects to experiment with distinct approaches to manipulating space and investigating how it is experienced. Among others, Extension Gallery has featured the work of Ball-Nogues Studio, Future Cities Lab, Philippe Rahm, Plasma Studio, and Jonathan Miller.
Located at 1835 S. Halstead Street in the Chicago Art District of Pilsen, Extension is open from 12-5 Saturday and Sunday and every second Friday from 6-10pm. Responsibilities
A large part of the internship of this gallery involves assisting to install and deinstall installations and monitoring during gallery hours. Other tasks include:
- participating in meetings with architects commissioned to design installations
- ordering materials
- providing information for visitors to the gallery
- assisting to prepare and host Second Fridays
- maintaining and updating Extension Gallery database and archiving
- creating and scheduling mailings for gallery promotional materials and communications
- developing database of all Chicago Galleries and Chicago Art and Cultural Institutions
- posting Gallery events and openings on all available event listing websites
- assisting in ensuring that all appropriate PR is provided and circulated
- design of Extension Gallery Website
- help in logistics and hospitality of visiting architects
- scheduling volunteers and interns

- interest and/or skill in constructing installations
- ability to interact with people in a gallery setting
